Abstract: High-temperature superconductors have the potential to improve current technologies, ranging from renewable energy to quantum computing. Since the discovery of cuprate superconductors in 1986, substantial research has been conducted to identify other high-temperature superconducting families, but more importantly, to understand their fundamental properties in order to one day create a room-temperature superconductor that can be used for broader applications. X-ray and neutron scattering results on the particular cuprate superconductor La2xSrxCuO4 will be presented in this colloquium, as well as how the utilization of complementary techniques aids in the understanding the physics of complex materials.
